If you’re thinking about picking up Sophia Amoruso’s #GIRLBOSS, you should have done it yesterday. I’ll have to warn you that you will most likely feel the increasing urge to take over the world and hit the ground running after each motivating chapter, so it’s not the best pick for a bedside read.
#1 -There was no glorified or arrogant account of what success looks like, even for the CEO of Nasty Gal: “You can’t act like you’ve arrived when you’re only receiving the invitation.”
#2 -It makes clear that the process is not smooth: “..You can’t have it all, and nothing comes easy. You will make sacrifices and compromises, get let down and let other people down, fail and start over…out of the bajillions of things in this universe you can’t control, what you can control is how hard you try…”
#3 -Reminds you many times that working hard has no finish line: “It takes hard work to get there, and then once you arrive, it takes even more hard work to stay there.”
#4 -Highlights how to handle criticism and discouraging feedback along the way: “Regardless of what your dreams are, if you listen only to those around you, the chances of your dreams coming true are very small. The world loves to tell you how difficult things are…”
#5 -Mentions the importance and power of social media marketing: “Many companies were spending millions of dollars trying to nail social media, but I just went with my instincts and treated my customers like they were my friends.”
#6 -Stresses financial responsibility and shuns premature overspending: “Money looks better in the bank than on your feet.”
#7 -Unapologetically highlights Sophia’s humble beginnings and the ugly side of the hustle: “I didn’t come from money or prestigious schools, and I didn’t have any adults telling me what to do along the way. I figured it out on my own.”
#8 -Talks about the importance of failure: “There are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure.”
#9 -Looks down on competition and comparison: “Compete with yourself, not others…The energy you’ll expend focusing on someone else’s life is better spent working on your own.”
#10 -Tells it like it is: “Life is short. Don’t be lazy.”
With that said, don’t waste another minute. First, go grab this book. Next, spend every waking minute working hard and believing that “there’s a chance for you #GIRLBOSS. So take it.”
